A man caught a jackdaw, tied a thread around its leg, and gave it to his children. But the bird could not bear living among humans, and as soon as it had a moment’s freedom, it escaped and flew back to its nest. The thread, however, became tangled in the branches, leaving it unable to fly away. As it lay dying, it said to itself, “Wretched creature that I am! Unable to endure captivity among humans, I have unwittingly deprived myself of life itself.” This fable applies to those who, seeking to escape moderate dangers, unwittingly fall into greater perils.
