During the Yongjia era of Emperor Huai of Jin, an old woman named Han found an enormous egg in the wilderness. She took it home and tended it, and from it came a baby boy, whom she named Jue’er. When he was only four years old, Liu Yuan was trying to build the walls of Pingyang, but could not complete them, so he called for anyone capable of the task. Jue’er answered the call. He transformed himself into a snake and told the old woman to scatter ashes along his trail. “Build the walls along the line of ashes,” he said, “and they will soon be finished.” Everything happened just as he had promised. Yuan, alarmed by this marvel, had him thrown into a mountain cave. A few inches of his tail remained exposed, and Yuan’s messenger cut them off. Suddenly a spring gushed from the cave and gathered into a pool, which was therefore named Golden Dragon Pool.
