Fan Dan of Waihuang in Chenliu, who lived during the Han dynasty, had the courtesy name Shiyun. In his youth he served as a commandant. Once, while serving as a subordinate, he was sent with an official dispatch to call on the district inspector. A man of lofty resolve and firm principles, he bitterly resented being a petty official at others’ beck and call. In the great marshes of Chenliu, he killed the horse he was riding and discarded his official cap, making it appear that he had fallen victim to robbers. A spirit descended upon his household and said, “I am Shiyun. I have been killed by robbers. Hurry and fetch my clothes from the great marshes of Chenliu.” His family went there and found a cap. Fan Dan then went to Nanjun and later made his way into the Three Metropolitan Districts, where he spent thirteen years traveling and studying in the company of distinguished and worthy men before returning home. His family no longer recognized him. The people of Chenliu held his aspirations and conduct in high esteem, and after his death they called him “Master of Steadfast Integrity.”
