Fei Ji, a man of Wu, had long been sojourning in Chu. In those days the roads were plagued by bandits, and his wife often feared for his safety. Once, he and a group of fellow travelers lodged at the foot of Mount Lu and began asking one another how long they had been away from home. Ji said, “I left home several years ago. When I was taking leave of my wife, I asked her for her gold hairpin to take with me. I only wanted to test her heart and see whether she would give it to me. Once she had handed it over, I put it on top of the door lintel. When I set out, I forgot to tell her, so the hairpin must still be there.” That very night, his wife dreamed that Ji said to her, “On my journey I fell among bandits and was killed. I have been dead for two years now. If you do not believe me, when I left I took your hairpin, but did not carry it away. I left it on top of the door lintel. Go and look for it there.” His wife awoke, felt along the lintel for the hairpin, and found it. The household then began the funeral rites. More than a year later, Ji returned home.
