It is also told that al-Mutalammis fled from al-Nu‘man ibn al-Mundhir and remained away so long that people thought him dead. He had a beautiful wife named Umayma, whose family urged her to marry again, but she refused. With so many suitors seeking her hand, they pressed her insistently and compelled her to remarry. She yielded unwillingly, and they married her to a man of her own people, though she loved her husband al-Mutalammis dearly. On the very night of her wedding to the man they had forced her to marry, al-Mutalammis returned. Hearing pipes and tambourines in the quarter and seeing signs of rejoicing, he asked some boys what the celebration was for. They told him, “They have married Umayma, the wife of al-Mutalammis, to so-and-so, and tonight he goes in to her.” When al-Mutalammis heard this, he contrived to slip in among the women. He found the couple seated on their bridal dais, and the bridegroom had drawn near to her. She heaved a deep sigh, wept, and recited this verse:

“Would that I knew, amid all fortune’s blows, in what land you are, O Mutalammis!” Her husband al-Mutalammis was a renowned poet, and he answered her:

“In the nearest house, Umayma—know this well! And still I longed for you whenever the caravan halted for the night.” At this the bridegroom understood what had passed between them and hastily withdrew, reciting:

“I fared well once, but now my lot is overturned; may a spacious house and a welcoming chamber shelter you both!” Then he left them and went away, and al-Mutalammis was alone with his wife. They lived together in the sweetest, most untroubled ease and happiness until death parted them. Glory be to Him by whose command the earth and heavens stand.
