Prevod

It is also told that al-Qasim ibn Adi related the following account from a man of Banu Tamim: I once went out in search of a stray beast and came to the watering places of Banu Tayy, where I saw two encampments close to one another. From one I heard voices like those coming from the other. Looking more closely, I saw in one of the camps a young man so wasted by illness that he resembled a worn-out waterskin. As I watched him, he began to recite these verses:

Why does the fair one never come to visit? Is she ungenerous, or has she turned away? I fell ill, and all my kin came to my bedside; why are you not among those who visit me? Had you been ill, I would have hastened to you, and no threat could have held me back. Among them all, it was you I missed, and so I remained alone: to lose one’s beloved, O comfort of my heart, is bitter indeed. A maiden in the other camp heard his words and hurried toward him. Her family followed, and she struggled against them. When the young man became aware of her, he sprang toward her, but the people of his camp rushed up and held him fast. He strained to free himself from them, while she struggled to escape her own people, until at last they both broke loose. Each hastened toward the other, and they met between the two camps and embraced, then fell to the ground, dead. Dawn overtook Shahrazad, and she fell silent, leaving her tale untold.

When it was the four hundred and eleventh night,

She said: It has reached me, O fortunate king, that when the young man and the maiden met between the two camps and embraced, they fell to the ground, dead. An old man came out of one of the tents and stood over them, saying, “To God we belong, and to Him we return,” and weeping bitterly. Then he said, “May God Most High have mercy on you both! By God, though you were not united in life, I shall unite you after death.” He then ordered that they be prepared for burial. They were washed and wrapped together in a single shroud, and one grave was dug for them. The people prayed over them and buried them in that grave. There was not a man or woman in either camp whom I did not see weeping for them and beating themselves in grief. I asked the old man about them, and he told me, “This was my daughter, and this my brother’s son. Love brought them to what you have seen.” I said, “May God set their affairs right! Why did you not marry them to one another?” He replied, “I feared shame and disgrace, and now I have fallen into both.” Such is one of the wondrous tales of lovers.
