During the reign of Wu, Ge Zuo served as governor of Hengyang. Within the commandery, a great tree trunk lay across the river and wrought supernatural mischief. The people built a shrine to it. If travelers offered prayers and sacrifices, the trunk would sink beneath the water; otherwise, it would rise to the surface and wreck their boats. As Ge Zuo was about to leave office, he had a large supply of axes prepared, intending to rid the people of this scourge. He was to go there the following day, but that night a tumult like human voices was heard in the river. When people went to look, they found that the trunk had moved, drifting several miles downstream and coming to rest in a bend. From then on, travelers no longer suffered the danger of sinking or capsizing. The people of Hengyang erected a stele in Ge Zuo’s honor, inscribed: “Through upright virtue and prayers to avert calamity, the sacred tree was made to move.”
