Wang Ye, courtesy name Zixiang, served as Inspector of Jingzhou during the reign of Emperor He of Han. Whenever he set out on a tour of inspection, he would bathe, fast, and abstain from meat, praying to Heaven and Earth: “Enlighten and guide my ignorant mind, and let no injustice be done to the people.” During his seven years in the province, benevolent government prevailed, cruelty and wickedness ceased, and no jackals or wolves roamed the mountains. When he died by the Xiang River, two white tigers came, their heads bowed and tails trailing, and kept vigil beside him. When his funeral procession departed, the tigers followed it beyond the provincial boundary, then suddenly vanished. The people together erected a memorial stele for him and called the site the White Tiger Tomb of the Xiang River.
