An amaranth growing beside a rose said to it, “What a lovely flower you are, cherished by gods and mortals alike! I envy your beauty and fragrance.” But the rose replied, “My dear amaranth, I live only a little while, and even if no one plucks me, I wither away. You, however, bloom forever and remain forever young.” It is better to live on, content with little, than to enjoy a brief spell of luxury only to suffer a turn of ill fortune or even death.
