Chunyu Zhi, courtesy name Shuping, was a native of Lu in Jibei. Deep and contemplative by nature, he was thoughtful and discerning. A scholar from his youth, he was skilled in divination by the Book of Changes and adept at charms for averting evil. One night, as Liu Rou of Gaoping lay asleep, a rat bit the middle finger of his left hand. Taking this as a very ill omen, he consulted Zhi. Zhi cast a divination for him and said, “The rat meant to kill you but could not. We must now make it die instead.” He then used vermilion to write the character 田 about three inches above the crease of Liu’s wrist, making it roughly an inch and a fifth square, and told him to sleep that night with his hand uncovered. A large rat was found lying dead before him.
