1. Theseus, the son of Aegeus by Aethra, on reaching manhood pushed aside the rock, took up the sandals and the sword, and set out on foot for Athens.
He cleared the road of the evildoers who infested it. First, at Epidaurus, he killed Periphetes, the son of Hephaestus and Anticlea, who was called the Club-bearer after the club he carried. Because his feet were weak, he carried an iron club, with which he killed those who passed by.
Theseus took this club from him and carried it himself.
2. Next he killed Sinis, the son of Polypemon and Sylea, daughter of Corinthus. He was called the Pine-bender: living on the Isthmus of Corinth, he forced passersby to bend pine trees down and hold them there. They lacked the strength to do so, and the trees flung them into the air, killing them outright. Theseus killed Sinis in the same way.
