Sheng Yan, courtesy name Wengzi, was a native of Guangling. His mother, née Wang, had lost her sight through illness, and Yan tended her himself. Whenever she ate, he would feed her with his own hands. Her illness dragged on, and the maidservant, who was often beaten, grew resentful. Hearing that Yan had gone out for a short while, she roasted some beetle grubs and fed them to his mother. His mother found them delicious, but suspected they were something unusual and secretly put some aside to show Yan. When he saw them, he embraced his mother and wept so bitterly that he lost consciousness before coming to again. His mother’s eyes suddenly opened, and from that moment her sight was restored.
