Chu Liao lost his mother at an early age and served his stepmother with the utmost filial devotion. When she developed an abscess, she grew more haggard by the day. Liao gently sucked at it himself until blood came out, and by nightfall she was able to sleep peacefully. She then dreamed of a little boy who told her, “If you can find carp to eat, your illness will be cured and your life prolonged. Otherwise, you will soon die.” When she awoke, she told Liao. It was the twelfth month, and the waters were frozen. Liao looked up to heaven, sighing and weeping, then took off his clothes and lay upon the ice. A boy appeared and struck at the spot where Liao lay. Suddenly the ice opened of its own accord, and a pair of carp leaped out. Liao took them home and served them to his stepmother, whose illness was cured at once. She lived to the age of one hundred and thirty-three. Such was the manifest response of the heavenly spirits, moved by his supreme filial devotion. This is like the stories of Wang Xiang and Wang Yan.
