When Zhang Huan of the Later Han was Administrator of Wuwei, his wife dreamed that the emperor bestowed a seal and ribbon of office upon her, and that she climbed a tower and sang. On waking, she told Zhang Huan, who had the dream interpreted. The interpreter said, “Your wife is about to bear a son. He will one day govern this commandery and meet his end in this tower.” She later bore a son, Meng. During the Jian’an era, he did indeed become Administrator of Wuwei. He killed the provincial inspector, Handan Shang, and was hard pressed by a siege laid by provincial troops. Rather than suffer the shame of capture, Meng climbed the tower and burned himself to death.
