Zhao Shou of Poyang kept a gu spirit in the form of a dog. Once, when Chen Cen went to visit him, six or seven large yellow dogs suddenly rushed out in a pack and barked at Cen. Later, Yu Xiangbo returned and shared a meal with Shou’s wife. He vomited blood and nearly died, but recovered after being given powdered balloonflower root to drink. Gu spirits are uncanny creatures, much like ghosts. Their sinister forms shift and change, taking the shapes of many different kinds of creatures: sometimes dogs or swine, sometimes insects or snakes. Those who keep them do not themselves know what forms they take. They unleash them upon the common people, and all who are afflicted die.
