Wang Hu of Shanyang, whose courtesy name was Menglian, served as commandant of Lanling in Donghai. At midnight, an official in a black headcloth and a white unlined robe would come to the county offices and knock at the gate. Whenever anyone went to receive him, he would suddenly vanish. This continued for several years. At last, someone kept watch and saw an old dog approach, its body as white as the robe had been. On reaching the gate, it changed into a man. The watcher reported this to Menglian, who had the dog killed. After that, the visitations ceased.
