In the sixth month under Emperor Ling, a rumor spread among the people of Luoyang that a yellow figure had appeared in the eastern wall of the Palace Guards’ quarters, its features, beard, and eyebrows plainly discernible. Tens of thousands came to look. Everyone in the palace offices came out, and the roads were completely blocked. By the second month, Zhang Jue and his brothers had raised an army in Ji Province, calling themselves “Yellow Heaven.” Their thirty-six divisions rose in concert on every side.
