Xiong Quzi of Chu was traveling by night when he saw a low-lying rock and took it for a crouching tiger. He bent his bow and shot. The metal arrowhead sank into the rock, and the feathers were battered. Looking down, he realized it was a stone. He shot at it again, but this time the arrow shattered without leaving a mark. In the Han dynasty, Li Guang, governor of Youbeiping, likewise shot at what he took to be a tiger, only to find it was a stone; the same thing happened. Liu Xiang said: “Such is the power of utter sincerity that even metal and stone yield before it—how much more, then, will people! When one calls and receives no answer, or acts and finds no followers, there must be something lacking within. Those who set the world right without so much as leaving their mats do so by seeking the answer in themselves.”
