A birdcatcher took his birdlime and reeds and went out to hunt. Seeing a thrush perched in a tall tree, he decided to catch it. So he joined his reeds into one long pole and gazed intently upward, his mind wholly fixed on the sky. Looking up like this, he unwittingly stepped on an asp lying asleep at his feet. It turned and bit him, and as his strength failed, he said to himself, “Wretched man that I am! While trying to hunt another, I was caught unawares and hunted to my death.” So those who plot against their neighbors are often the first to fall into misfortune themselves.
