Xingshi Zichen, a high official of Song, understood the workings of Heaven. In the thirty-seventh year of King Jing of Zhou, Duke Jing asked him, “What omens does Heaven reveal?” He replied, “Fifty years from now, on the dinghai day of the fifth month, I shall die. Five years after my death, on the dingmao day of the fifth month, Wu will fall. Five years after its fall, my lord, you will die. Four hundred years after your death, Zhu will rule all under Heaven.” In due course, everything came to pass as he had foretold. By “Zhu will rule all under Heaven,” he meant the rise of Wei. The rulers of Zhu bore the surname Cao, as did those of Wei, who were likewise descendants of Zhu. The numbers of years, however, are wrong. Did Xingshi miscalculate them?
