Krojačeva zgodba

Then the tailor stepped forward and said, “Know, O King of the Age, that what befell me is stranger than what befell all the others. Before I met the hunchback, early that day, I had been at a feast given by some friends of mine who were craftsmen—tailors, cloth merchants, carpenters, and the like. When the sun rose, the food was brought for us to eat, and just then the master of the house came in with a handsome young stranger from Baghdad. The young man wore the finest clothes and was exceedingly fair to look upon, but he was lame. He entered and greeted us, and we rose to welcome him. Yet as he was about to sit down, he caught sight of a barber among us, and refused to take his seat, wishing instead to leave. We and our host stopped him and pressed him to stay, and the master of the house implored him, saying, ‘Why do you come in only to go out again?’ He replied, ‘For God’s sake, my lord, do not stand in my way, for the reason I am leaving is this barber sitting here.’ When our host heard this, he was utterly astonished and said, ‘How can this young man be from Baghdad, and yet be so distressed at the sight of this barber?’ Then we turned to the young man and said, ‘Tell us why you are so angry with him.’ The young man replied, ‘My friends, a strange thing happened to me with this barber in Baghdad, my native city. He was the cause of my broken leg and my lameness, and I swore that never again would I sit with him in the same place or live in any town where he lived. I left Baghdad and journeyed here to settle in this city, but tonight I shall be on the road again.’ So we said to him, ‘For God’s sake, tell us your story with him.’”
