This, too, is a tale of long ago. During Emperor Toba’s reign, three men among Retired Emperor Shirakawa’s guards—Miyamichi no Norishige, Minamoto no Mitsuru, and Norikazu—were renowned for their skill at target archery. All three were summoned to serve among Emperor Toba’s palace guards. When their skill was put to the test, they scarcely ever missed, and the emperor delighted in encouraging them. One day he gave them a target three shaku and five sun across and commanded, “Shoot out its second black ring and bring it to me.” They received it at the hour of the Snake and brought it back, shot free, at the hour of the Sheep. Between the three of them, they had only three pairs of arrows. Realizing that it would take too long to wait for an arrow boy to return, the others ran to fetch the arrows themselves while one man shot. In this way they took turns shooting and retrieving, until, by about the middle of the hour of the Sheep, they had shot all around the second black ring, severed it from the target, and brought it before the emperor. People of the time are said to have praised them to the skies, declaring that their feat was truly worthy of Yang Youji.
