In the Later Han, Xu Xu, courtesy name Jingqing, was a native of Youquan in Wu. As a young man he served as a prison official, administering the law with care and fairness. While he was magistrate of Xiaohuang, a great plague of locusts swept through the surrounding counties, leaving not a blade of living grass in the fields. Yet whenever the locusts crossed into Xiaohuang, they flew on without settling. The provincial inspector, touring the districts under his jurisdiction, rebuked Xu for neglecting his duties. Xu resigned his post, and at once the locusts descended. The inspector apologized and asked him to return to his official residence, whereupon the locusts flew away.
