This, too, happened long ago. A boy from the country had climbed Mount Hiei, where the cherry blossoms were in splendid bloom. Seeing the wind blowing fiercely through them, he began to weep bitterly. A monk noticed him and gently drew near. “Why do you weep so? Does it grieve you to see these blossoms fall? Cherry blossoms are fleeting things, and soon fade away like this. Still, you must not take it so much to heart,” he said, trying to comfort him. “If the cherry blossoms fall, what can anyone do? That does not trouble me. What makes me so unhappy is thinking that the blossoms on my father’s barley will fall, and no grain will form.” With that, the boy caught his breath and broke into great sobs. What a sorry business!
