Cai Yong once visited Ke Pavilion, where bamboo had been used for the rafters. Looking up, he said, “What fine bamboo!” He took a piece and made it into a flute, whose clear notes carried far. Another account says: “Cai Yong told a man from Wu, ‘I once passed Gaoqian Pavilion in Kuaiji and noticed that the sixteenth bamboo rafter in the eastern bay would make a fine flute. It was taken down and used, and indeed its sound was extraordinary.’”
