During the reign of Emperor Ling of Han, Cai Yong of Chenliu repeatedly submitted memorials to the throne, offending the emperor. The court favorites, too, bore him ill will. Fearing for his life, he fled among the rivers and lakes, seeking refuge far away in Wu and Kuaiji. When he reached Wu, he came upon a local man burning paulownia wood for cooking. Hearing it crackle in the flames, Cai Yong said, “This is fine timber.” He asked for the wood and carved it into a qin, which indeed proved to have a beautiful tone. Since its tail end was charred, he named it the “Scorched-Tail Qin.”
