When Lai Jide of Nanyang, the Minister of Works, died and his coffin lay awaiting burial, his figure suddenly appeared, seated on the couch where offerings were laid. His face, clothing, voice, and manner were unmistakably his own. He admonished his grandchildren and the women of the household in turn, giving his instructions in an orderly fashion. He even caned the servants, punishing each for faults they had indeed committed. When he had finished eating and drinking, he bade them farewell and departed. The whole household, young and old, was overcome with heart-rending grief. This continued for several years, until the family grew increasingly weary and distressed. Then one day he drank too much wine, and in his drunkenness his true form was revealed: he was nothing but an old dog. Together they beat it to death. On making inquiries, they learned that it belonged to a wine seller in the village.
