Li Shujian, the governor of Guiyang, once had a dog that walked upright like a human while he was serving as an administrative aide. His household said, “It ought to be killed.” Shujian replied, “Dogs and horses can learn from a gentleman. The dog saw people walking and copied them. What harm is there in that?” Before long, the dog ran about wearing Shujian’s cap. The household was greatly alarmed. Shujian said, “It merely brushed against the cap’s cords by accident and got them caught on itself.” Then the dog began banking the fire in front of the stove. The household grew still more uneasy. Shujian said again, “The boys and maidservants are all out in the fields. With the dog helping to tend the fire, we are fortunate not to have to trouble the neighbors. What is so sinister about that?” A few days later, the dog suddenly died. In the end, not the slightest untoward event occurred.
