A shepherd drove his sheep into a grove, where he spotted an enormous oak laden with acorns. Spreading his cloak beneath it, he climbed the tree and shook down the acorns. As the sheep ate them, they tore his cloak to pieces without his noticing. When the shepherd climbed down and saw what had happened, he said, “You wretched creatures! You provide wool to clothe others, yet you have robbed me, the very man who feeds you, even of my cloak.” So too, many people foolishly do good to those who have no claim on them, while treating their own badly.
