How fortunate a master is, and how well his household fares, when he has a clever servant who listens to what he says but does not do as he is told, preferring to follow his own wisdom. Just such a clever Hans was once sent out by his master to look for a lost cow. He was gone a long time, and his master thought, ‘Faithful Hans! He never begrudges any trouble in my service.’ But when he still did not return, his master feared that something might have happened to him, so he set off himself to look for him. He had to search for a long time, but at last he caught sight of the servant running to and fro in an open field. ‘Well, dear Hans,’ said the master when he had caught up with him, ‘have you found the cow I sent you to look for?’ ‘No, master,’ he answered, ‘I haven’t found the cow, but I haven’t looked for her either.’ ‘What have you been looking for, then, Hans?’ ‘Something better, and luckily I’ve found it too.’ ‘What is it, Hans?’ ‘Three blackbirds,’ answered the servant. ‘And where are they?’ asked the master. ‘One I can see, another I can hear, and the third I’m chasing,’ answered the clever servant.

Take a lesson from this: pay no heed to your master or his orders, but do whatever comes into your head and whatever takes your fancy, and then you will be acting just as wisely as clever Hans.
