Demosthenes the orator, once prevented by the Athenians from speaking in the assembly, said that he wished to tell them something brief. When they fell silent, he said, “A young man hired a donkey one summer to travel from Athens to Megara. At midday, with the sun blazing fiercely, both he and the donkey’s owner wanted to shelter in its shade. But each tried to keep the other out: the owner said that he had hired out the donkey, not its shadow, while the young man claimed that, having hired it, he had every right to its shade.” With that, Demosthenes turned to leave. When the Athenians stopped him and begged him to finish the story, he said, “So you are willing to listen to a tale about a donkey’s shadow, but when I speak about serious matters, you will not listen?”
