An ass had stepped on a thorn and stood there lame. Seeing a wolf, he said to him, “Wolf, look, I am dying of pain. Better that I should be your supper than a meal for vultures or ravens. I ask you just one favor: first pull the thorn out of my foot, so that I need not die in agony.” The wolf took hold of the thorn with the tips of his teeth and pulled it out. Freed from his pain, the ass kicked the wolf in his open mouth, smashing his nose, forehead, and teeth, and ran away. “Alas!” said the wolf. “I deserve what I have suffered. I was trained as a butcher, yet now, for the first time, I wanted to become a horse doctor.” Thus some, caught between two dangers, have cunningly repaid with harm the enemies who tried to help them.
