An ass grazing in a meadow saw a wolf rushing toward him and pretended to be lame. When the wolf came up and asked why he was limping, the ass said that he had trodden on a thorn while crossing a fence. He urged the wolf to pull it out before making a meal of him, so that it would not prick the wolf as he ate. The wolf agreed, lifted the ass’s hoof, and gave it his full attention. At that moment, the ass kicked him in the mouth and knocked out his teeth. Badly hurt, the wolf said, “I have only got what I deserve. My father taught me the art of cooking—why did I take up medicine?” So too, people who attempt things outside their proper calling naturally come to grief.
