A rooster was once feeding alongside a donkey. When a lion approached the donkey, the rooster crowed, and the lion fled—for they say that lions are afraid of a rooster’s crow. The donkey, thinking the lion had fled because of him, immediately charged after it. But when he had pursued it so far that the rooster’s crow could no longer be heard, the lion turned and devoured him. As he lay dying, the donkey cried, “Wretched fool that I am! With no warriors for ancestors, why did I rush into battle?” The fable shows that many people attack enemies who deliberately make a show of weakness, and so meet their end at those enemies’ hands.
