In Xingyang Commandery lived a family surnamed Liao, who had practiced gu sorcery for generations and grown rich by it. In time they brought a new bride into the household, but told her nothing of this. One day, when everyone else had gone out and the bride alone remained to watch the house, she happened upon a large jar indoors. Curious, she lifted its lid and saw a great snake inside. She boiled water and poured it over the snake, killing it. When the family returned, she told them all that had happened, and the whole household was aghast and dismayed. Before long, a pestilence struck the family, and nearly all of them died.
