In the third month of the third year of the Zhenghe era of the Han dynasty, rain fell in torrents. He Bigan was at home and, at midday, dreamed that the carriages and mounted attendants of distinguished guests crowded his gate. On waking, he told his wife. Before he had finished speaking, an old woman appeared at the gate. She looked over eighty, with snow-white hair, and asked to take shelter from the rain. Though the rain was heavy, her clothes were not wet. When it stopped, Bigan saw her to the gate, where she said to him, “You have done good deeds unseen, and now Heaven bestows these tallies upon you, that your descendants may flourish.” From within her robe she took out a set of sacred tallies, shaped like bamboo slips, each nine inches long, nine hundred and ninety in all. Handing them to Bigan, she said, “The number of your descendants who wear the seals and ribbons of office shall equal the number of these tallies.”
