A poor man lay gravely ill, and when the doctors had given up hope of saving him, he prayed to the gods, vowing to sacrifice a hundred oxen and dedicate sacred offerings if he recovered. His wife, who happened to be standing beside him, asked, “And where will you find the means to pay for all that?” He replied, “Do you really think I shall recover, so that the gods can demand it of me?” The fable shows that people readily make promises they do not expect to have to fulfill.
