A man whose wife was exceedingly ill-tempered toward everyone in his household wished to find out whether she behaved in the same way toward her father’s servants. So, on a plausible pretext, he sent her to her father’s house. When she returned a few days later, he asked how the household had received her. “The cowherds and shepherds looked at me askance,” she replied. “Well, wife,” he said, “if you made yourself hateful to men who drive their flocks out at dawn and do not come home until evening, what must we suppose about those with whom you spent the whole day?” Thus great things are often understood from small ones, and what is hidden from what is plain.
