During the Zhengshi era of Cao Fang, Prince of Qi and ruler of Wei, Wang Zhounan of Zhongshan was serving as magistrate of Xiangyi. One day a rat suddenly emerged from a hole and spoke in the audience hall: “Wang Zhounan! You are to die on such-and-such a day of such-and-such a month.” Zhounan hurried over but made no reply. The rat returned to its hole. When the appointed day arrived, it emerged again, this time wearing a cap, headcloth, and black robes, and said, “Zhounan! You are to die at noon today.” Again he made no reply. The rat went back into its hole. A little later it came out again, going in and out and scurrying about, several times repeating what it had said before. At last noon came. The rat spoke again: “Zhounan! You are not fated to die—what more can I say!” With that, it toppled over and died. At once its cap and robes vanished. When they went to examine it, it was no different from an ordinary rat.
