Youquan County was known as Changshui County in the days of Qin. During the reign of the First Emperor, a children’s rhyme went: “When blood appears upon the city gate, the city will sink and become a lake.” An old woman heard it and went every morning to inspect the gate. The gatekeeper was about to have her bound when she explained why she came. Later, the gatekeeper smeared the gate with dog’s blood. The old woman saw the blood and fled at once. Suddenly a great flood came, threatening to engulf the county town. The chief clerk, Ling Gan, went in to report to the magistrate. The magistrate said, “How have you suddenly become a fish?” Gan replied, “Your Honor is becoming a fish as well.” And so the town sank beneath the waters and became a lake.
