In the twenty-seventh year of King Hui of Qin’s reign, the king sent Zhang Yi to build the walls of Chengdu, but they repeatedly collapsed. Suddenly, a great turtle appeared on the river, floating to the southeastern corner of the eastern citadel, where it died. Zhang Yi consulted a shaman, who said, “Build the walls following the turtle’s outline.” The walls were then successfully completed, and so the city was named Guihua—the Turtle-Transformed City.
