This, too, happened long ago. When the Seventh Prince paid a visit to the abbot of Shōren-in, some young clerical dignitaries and other accomplished monks held a Kōshin vigil to amuse him and relieve his boredom. An exceedingly ugly page was going about serving the wine, and one of the monks quietly offered a verse: “This court page is worse-looking even than a great temple page.” While the others were pondering a continuation, the monk Chūin, who was among those present, spoke up. “Here, here! I already have a verse to follow it.” The young monks exchanged glances, wondering what he had thought of. Chūin then supplied his lines: “He need only wait for the Gion festival.” “How does that follow the first verse?” they whispered to one another. Chūin overheard them. “Why, you fellows, my point was that not even a linked verse could be made to fit him!” As word of this passed around, everyone burst into loud laughter at once—or so the story goes.
