In Tingli, in the northern township of Haiyan County in Wu Commandery, there lived a scholar named Chen Jia, originally from Xiapi. During the reign of Emperor Yuan of Jin, he was staying in Huating. While hunting in a great marsh in the eastern countryside, he suddenly came upon an enormous snake lying below a ridge. It was sixty or seventy feet long, as bulky as a boat carrying a hundred bushels, and patterned in five colors, including black and yellow. Chen shot it dead but dared not tell anyone. Three years later, he was hunting with some fellow villagers when they reached the place where he had seen the snake. He told his companions, “I once killed a great snake here.” That night, he dreamed that a man in dark robes and a black headcloth came to his house and demanded, “I was senseless with drink when you wantonly killed me. Because I was drunk, I did not see your face, and so for three years I could not find you. Today I have come to claim your life.” Chen awoke with a start. The next day, he suffered pains in his belly and died.
