During the reign of Emperor Wu of Jin, a young man and woman in Hejian Commandery fell secretly in love and pledged to marry. Soon afterward, the man went off to serve in the army and did not return for many years. The woman’s family wished to marry her to someone else. She refused, but her parents pressed her until she had no choice but to go. Before long, she fell ill and died. When the young man returned from garrison duty, he asked where she was, and her family told him all that had happened. He went to her grave, intending to weep for her and pour out his grief, but his feelings so overwhelmed him that he opened the grave and lifted the coffin lid. The woman at once came back to life. He carried her home on his back and nursed her for several days, until she was as well as ever. When the husband she had married heard of this, he went to demand her return. The young man refused, saying, “Your wife is dead. Who in all the world has ever heard of a dead person coming back to life? Heaven has bestowed this woman on me; she is not your wife.” The two brought their dispute before the authorities, but neither the county nor the commandery could settle it, and the case was referred to the Chamberlain for Law Enforcement. Wang Dao, a Gentleman of the Palace Library, submitted this opinion to the throne: “The utmost sincerity can move Heaven and Earth, and thus one who was dead has returned to life. This is no ordinary occurrence and cannot be judged by ordinary rules of propriety. I request that she be restored to the man who opened her grave.” The court adopted his recommendation.
