A hungry fox caught sight of some meat and bread that a shepherd had left in a bag at his hut. She went inside and ate them with relish. But her belly swelled so much that she could no longer get out of the hut, and she began to groan and lament. Another fox, passing by, heard her groans, came over, and asked, “Why are you making such a fuss?” When she learned what had happened, she said, “Well, you must stay here until you are as you were when you went in.” The fable shows that time resolves difficulties.

Ἀλώπηξ λιμώττουσα ἐν πήρᾳ ἐθεάσατο ἐπί τινα καλύβην βοσκοῦ κρέα καὶ ἄρτον ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ καταλειφθέντα, καὶ εἰσελθοῦσα ἔφαγεν αὐτὰ ἡδέως. Ἐξογκωθείσης δὲ αὐτῆς τῆς γαστρὸς, καὶ διὰ τοῦτο μὴ δυναμένης ἐξελθεῖν τῆς καλύβης, ἔστενε καὶ ἐπωδύρετο. Ἑτέρα δὲ ἀλώπηξ διερχομένη ἤκουσεν αὐτῆς τῶν στε- ναγμῶν, καὶ προσελθοῦσα ἐπυνθάνετο, διʼ ἣν αἰτίαν τοῦτο ποιεῖς; Μαθοῦσα δὲ τὸ γεγονὸς ἡ ἀλώπηξ ἔφη· ,,ἀλλὰ μένε τέως ἐνταῦθα σὺ, ἕως ἂν τοιαύτη γένῃ, ὁποία οὖσα εἰσῆλθες.“
Ὁ μῦθος δηλοῖ, ὅτι τὰ χαλεπὰ τῶν πραγμάτων ὁ χρόνος διαλύει.
