A lion often reproached Prometheus for having made him large and handsome, armed his jaws with teeth, strengthened his paws with claws, and made him mightier than the other beasts. “Yet for all that,” he would say, “I am afraid of a rooster.” Prometheus replied, “Why blame me without cause? You have every gift I had the power to bestow; it is only in this one thing that your spirit fails you.” So the lion bewailed his lot and reproached himself for his cowardice, until at last he wished to die. In this frame of mind he came upon an elephant, greeted him, and stood talking with him. Noticing that the elephant kept moving his ears, he asked, “What troubles you? Why does your ear never stay still, even for a moment?” Just then a gnat happened to fly about the elephant, and he replied, “Do you see that tiny buzzing creature? If it gets into my ear, I am dead.” “Then why should I wish to die?” said the lion. “I am better off than the elephant by as much as a rooster is mightier than a gnat!” You see how much power a gnat has: it can frighten even an elephant.
