A lion, a donkey, and a fox formed a partnership and went out hunting. When they had caught a great deal of game, the lion ordered the donkey to divide it among them. The donkey made three equal portions and invited the others to choose. Enraged, the lion devoured the donkey. Then he ordered the fox to divide the spoils. She heaped everything into a single portion, leaving only a little for herself. The lion said to her, “Who taught you to divide things so well, my dear?” She replied, “The donkey’s misfortune.” The fable shows that people learn wisdom from the misfortunes of others.
