A lion, plotting against an enormous bull, wished to get the better of him. So, claiming to have slaughtered a sheep, he invited the bull to a feast, intending to overpower him once he had reclined to dine. But when the bull arrived and saw many cauldrons and great spits, yet no sheep anywhere, he turned to leave without a word. The lion reproached him and asked why he was leaving so unreasonably when nothing bad had happened to him. The bull replied, “I have good reason for what I am doing: I see preparations made not for a sheep, but for a bull.” The story shows that the schemes of the wicked do not escape the notice of the wise.
