A man who was thinking of buying a donkey took it on trial to see what it was like. He brought it home and put it at the manger with his own donkeys. But it left the others and stood beside the laziest and most gluttonous of them [who did no work]. So the man tied it up, led it back, and returned it to its owner. When the owner asked whether he had put it to the test so quickly, he replied, “Why, I have no need to try it out. I know what it is like from the companion it chose out of all the others.” Everyone is judged by the company they keep.
