(No one admits his ignorance, however plain it may be.) Some little animals, All of them four-footed, Once played a game Of blind man’s buff. A Puppy and a Fox, 5 And a Mouse—that made three; A Squirrel and a Hare And a Monkey—that made six. The Monkey tied the blindfolds Over all their eyes, for he 10 Was the one who knew best How to put his hands to use. A Mole heard the commotion And said, “Well, by heaven, I shall go over there 15 And join their circle too.” He asked to be admitted, And the Monkey, most politely, Granted his request (No doubt to make fun of him). 20 At every step the Mole Stumbled twenty times, For his eyes are covered With a layer of skin; And in the very first round, 25 As anyone might have guessed, They caught His Lordship With the greatest ease. It was now his turn To play the blind man; 30 And who could possibly Be better suited to the part? But he, pretending otherwise To keep up appearances, Said to the Monkey, “Well, then? 35 Come, won’t you blindfold me?” If one who knows he is blind Pretends that he can see, Will one who knows he is a fool Confess himself to be? 40
